November 9, 2025 - In Permits

The Town of Ashland requires various permits and licenses to help keep building, land use, and local activities safe, orderly, and in line with town and county ordinances. This page gives residents, landowners, and businesses a clear starting point for what may be needed before beginning a project or event.

Common permits and licenses may include:

Building & Land Use Permits – Required for most new construction, additions, major remodeling, accessory buildings (garages, sheds, pole barns), and certain changes in land use. Many of these approvals are coordinated with county zoning and state codes.

Driveway / Right-of-Way Permits – Needed when creating a new driveway, changing an existing driveway, or doing work that affects town roads, ditches, or right-of-way areas.

Fire / Burning Permits – Required for open burning in certain conditions or seasons, and for larger brush or debris piles, to help prevent wildfires and ensure safe burning practices.

Special Event Permits – For events that may affect traffic, parking, noise, or the use of town facilities, such as festivals, larger gatherings, or organized activities open to the public.

Business & Operator Licenses – Certain business activities may require licenses (for example, sale of alcohol or operation of specific types of businesses), which are typically coordinated with county and state requirements.

Animal & Dog Licenses – Dogs and certain animals must be licensed as required by Wisconsin law and local ordinances.

Before starting any project or new use, residents are encouraged to contact the Town Clerk to confirm which permits or licenses are required, how to apply, and what fees may apply. Application forms, instructions, and additional details will be available on this Permits & Licenses page, and where possible, can be downloaded and returned by mail, email, or in person.
